3. Are there examinations during the residency? How are the residents’ evaluated?:

Yes.
It depends on the school. Every school in every faculty can choose the evaluation type, and do written, oral or practical exams. During the course, there are variable exams every year, necessary to continue to next year. There is a judging commission composed by the teachers who did classes to residents during the year. At the end of last year students have to write a thesis and present it to achieve the degree of specialist.

4. How many hours of work per week are there?:

35 hours per week plus shifts ( depending on the school )

5. What is the ratio between this country’s doctors and its population?:

Italian is the official state language

Section B. Finance
1. A. Is there a tuition fee for the residency? If so, how much (in euro or usd)?:

Yes.
It depends on the Faculty. Basically you pay as a uiversity student (it means about 1000 euros per year depending on the university). Private universities have more expensive fees

2. What is the annual salary (in euro or u.s.d)?:

It is around 800 euros a month, 11603.50 euros a year. The payement of shifts depends on the hospital, in some hopsitals shifts are not payed! The problem is that in Italy, residents are not considered as workers, but as students, so the money they gain is not a salary but a grant; they don't have worker's rights, as days for illness, maternity, etc. Doing shift in most universities is considered a didactical part of studies. Since 1999 there is a law that estabilishes a contract for residents, and residents are considered as workers, but it is still unupplied. You can find the text of the law in our website on the link:
http://www.sism.org/sism/assets/archivio/word/Decreto_Legislativo_17agos...

3. How expensive are the costs of living (average annual expenditure in euro or u.s.d)?:

Around 9000-12000 Euros a year (basic life: accomodation, food, transportation) depending on the city

Section C. Application Procedure
1. Accreditation procedure:

Physicians can get the medical licence once they finish the major. And if you are foreigner, depending on the country you are from, you could obtain it more or less easily.

After graduation, in Italy another exam is needed (State exam) to work as a doctor and to access the "Ordine dei medici", a public istitution, divided in sections for every city, that provide also pension for doctors (ENPAM). To access the Ordine there is an annual fee of about 100-150 euros per year. At the end of every year, every doctor has to pay ENPAM, to have contribution for pension, depending on how much money he gained every year. To work as a doctor is compulsory to pass the State exam and then to access the local Ordine dei Medici. To be a family doctor, there is course of 3 year , but if a doctor does this course he can't then do also residency and become a specialist; the same is for specialists: after the degree of specialists, they can't access the course of family doctor. Without specialization or Family doctor degree, you can just work as substitution of family doctor (for limited period), or do some shift in private hospital, or local structures.

2. Other requirements:

There are requirements depending on the country you are from but you will need to convalidate your licence through the Ministery of Health ( the easier way is to contact the local Italian Embassy )

3. Differences in application procedure depending on country of origin:

Every physician needs to take a local exam in order to have the chance to start Residency. Foreign students also have to pass an italian exam

Local-International Residents further References
see local university website, listed in section A.2

4. Ratio between applicants and physicians who finally obtain a residency position:

Every year it changes to a better one. It depends on the kind of residency. Every 3 years the Italian Ministery of Education, working with National Conference of Regions, estabilishes the number of residents needed for single speciality and single university. So it happens a speciality to be highly requested from students but with only few palces available (in some case just 30 for all Italy)

5. Does everyone who passes the medical license examinations gain a residency position in a hospital?:

Everyone has to pass the exam

6. Specialties in which it is most difficult to obtain a position:

It depends on the year, but Surgeries in general or those with which you can get a job easily afterwards (oftalmology, Plastic surgery...). At the moment in Italy anesthesiologists and radiologists are very needed and get a job very easily

7. Is there a waiting list for medical graduates who want to begin a residency?:

No, there isn't a waiting list, if someone doesn't pass the exam he has to repeat it the following year untill he passes.

8. Countries, except this one, in which the medical residency title is recognized:

It depends, but basicly in the EU it is recognised

Section D. Any Other Important Information
Any other important information not covered above:

On 2004,has been applied for the first time the new procedure of admission to residency. It’s a new exam: first part of the exam is a multiple choice test with 60 questions (40 about general medicine and 20 about the specialization one’s applying to). If one passes the first part (48 questions) you can sustain the second part of the exam: three question about a topic of the specialization you’re applying to(about clinical and instrumental evaluation, diagnosis and prognosis). If the three answers are correct you have passed the exam. You have scores from each part of the exam and from your personal curriculum so that you get a total final score with which you enter a list. One gets the residency or not according his/her position on the list and the number of places available for that specialty on the faculty he/she attended the exam. Actually there are three national dates for the exam: one for the so called “medical specialties”, one for the “surgical specialties” and one for the “public service specialties”.

To find the law, you can see our website, at the following link: http://www.sism.org

On the Home page you’ll find the banner “Riforma delle Scuole di Specializzazione” on the right side. Here you can find the law and the link to the multiple choice tests database.

Section E. Other References
Other references:

It's very hard to find infos on public website (ex. ministry of health or of education) especially at the moment that the system is going to change. Things are also different depending on different countries (for example, some countries provide a salary for doctors who are residents in Italy, some don't; in some cases the salary is provided by Italy, for example for EU doctors). I think that contacting the local Italian embassy is the easier way to understand something!
